Not getting all the postings

Question:

Elaine,  the brain is not going. I think it ahs something to do with aol because I do not get all the postings either.  The list of newsgroups will say that there are 30 "unread messages)  but I might get only four.  If you figure out how to get them all,  let me know. Marialyce

For me it is just the opposite – it always has more than what it states.  For example – it said there were 2 unread messages, but when I opened the newsgroup there were 27 unread messages. ~Sherri Webmaster, Tibbett Services http://www.Tibbett-Services.com  (Website Design, Hosting, and More…) http://www.Tibbett.Org  (Products, Patterns, Iron-Ons, Santa Letters & More…) http://www.Carmichael-CA.com (Community Website for Carmichael, CA)

Response:

I have used AOL to read this newsgroup almost every day for close to two years now without any major problems.  I’d suggest that you check your "preferences" section while you are in RCTN to see what your settings are.  Also, instead of reading RCTN by going through the "Internet, Newgroups" method, go to RCTN and mark it as a "Favorite" by using the "red heart" icon in the upper right corner.  Finally, make sure that you are not clicking on "Mark all posts read" before you are indeed finished with reading them all. This happens to me too. Sometimes I mark a post unread so I can go back to it later. Whenever I do this, my count is off. It corrects itself eventually, when I’ve gotten down to zero. Also, if you are filtering, it seems to count as unread all the posts that you aren’t seeing because of the filter. I get around this by marking the entire newsgroup read when I have read all of its posts. I’ve never had the problem Sherri reported, where she has more messages than it says. I read RCTN online instead of downloading; I don’t know if this has anything to do with it. Thanks for all your help on this.  I changed my settings and ended up with 6000 postings to read.  Am still wading through them!  My next question is how do you all get the time to do XS as well as reading the postings, I’m finding I have to do one or the other but haven’t got the time to do both, unless I stay up way past the witching hour in which case I have total pattern dyslexia the following day!

Elaine,     You have to learn to be selective.  I would dump the 6000 old posts, and just start afresh.   Learn how to quickly look at the title, author, and initial part of the contents.  If the post is of no interest, go quickly to the next. — Jim Cripwell.  Treat the earth well.  For it was not given to us                by our parents, but lent to us by our children.                        Author unknown.

I have basically stopped reading the OT’s.  Some I do if they interest me and I must confess to reading some when the flame throwers (or bic lighters) come out. I don’t read on weekends anymore, I stitch. Pick and choose, find a happy medium but always read the boring stories! Richard — ICQ # 1150825 AIM = joxxter

Simple!  I’ve got a simply amazing DF who indulges me way too often! *BG* He allows me to be lazy on selective days, well ok I admit, every other day, to read the posts AND get stitching done!  (He’s all mine ladies you cant have him! lol) While he’s tending to our brood of four legged babies and dinner I read my posts and then after the ‘babies’ have gone to bed he tidies up and we chat while I stitch.  Jeez I’m lucky! lol Cris

Help, I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong, but despite downloading postings approx every second day I seem to be losing some of them.  When I read the postings I feel that I am not keeping up with what’s going on as there are gaps in the sequence of the postings.  Am I just being daft or is the brain just going?

I suspect you are only downloading a small number each time. Your settings probably need to be increased or download more often. It may also be your ISP.  They might not allow all the postings.  Mine is that way – though it’s getting better as they are updating their servers.  Some days all get through – other days only a portion, with lots of "expired messages".  It helps if I check it more than once a day. No, darlin’, you’re not daft.  Other than the fact that you seem to be using AOL as your newsfeed.  AOL is notorious for missing posts.  If you’re serious about computing, and internet access in general, you might consider using another internet service provider.  Concentric is one, and it’s nation-wide.   If you REALLY want to get all the posts, you might consider getting an able to get posts up to a month or two old.  Again, you’ll need a reliable ISP (internet service provider).   Good luck!
